Gilgit-Baltistan
A high meadow under Nanga Parbat, reached by a jeep track and a morning’s walk
Fairy Meadows is a grassy clearing in the pines at about 3,300 m, looking straight across the Raikot Glacier at Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain on earth.
Getting there is half the story: a narrow jeep track from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, then a walk of two to three hours. There are no roads at the top, only wooden cabins, a few camps and the mountain.
Mar – May
Snow lingers on the trail into May, and the cabins open late in the month.
Jun – Aug
Green meadows and the clearest views of the mountain. Days 15–20°C, nights near freezing.
Sep – Nov
Crisp, clear days in September. The cabins close in October as the cold sets in.
Dec – Feb
The meadow lies under deep snow, and the jeep track is closed.
Two to three hours uphill from Tato on a good path. Ponies can carry bags, or you.
Narrow and high above the gorge. Local drivers only; it is a white-knuckle hour for some.
At 3,300 m nights drop close to freezing, even in July. Bring warm layers and a torch.
There’s no mobile signal at the meadow, and power only in the evenings.
