Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Lakes, glaciers and the road over Babusar Top, a cool escape from the summer heat
The Kaghan Valley follows the Kunhar River north from Balakot, climbing through pine forest to Naran, the valley’s main town and the base for its lakes.
Above it lie Lake Saiful Muluk under Malika Parbat, the long blue water of Lulusar, and the road over Babusar Top into Gilgit-Baltistan. It is a summer valley: the road above Naran opens only once the snow clears.
Mar – May
The road reaches Naran in May, but the lakes are still frozen. Days 10–18°C.
Jun – Aug
The season proper: Babusar Top opens in June and the lakes thaw. Days 18–25°C, cool nights.
Sep – Nov
Clear, quiet days in September and early October. Most hotels close by November.
Dec – Feb
Heavy snow closes the valley above Kaghan, and Naran shuts until spring.
The road above Naran opens around June and closes with the first snow. Outside summer, most hotels are shut.
Saiful Muluk is a short jeep ride above Naran on a rough track; the jeep is included in our trips.
Signal is good in Naran and gone at the lakes and on Babusar Top.
