Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Pine forests, rivers and old Buddhist sites, an easy first trip north for families
Swat runs from the plains at Mingora up to Kalam and beyond, along a river that stays green and cold all summer. Pine forests, orchards and meadows line the way, with the slopes of Malam Jabba above.
It is also one of the oldest Buddhist landscapes in South Asia, with stupas and monasteries around Mingora. Good roads and short drives make it an easy first trip north for families.
Mar – May
Blossom in the lower valley from March. Days 18–25°C in Mingora, cooler in Kalam.
Jun – Aug
The best time for Kalam and Mahodand Lake. Days 25–32°C lower down, 15–22°C up the valley.
Sep – Nov
Clear skies and the orchard harvest. Days 15–25°C.
Dec – Feb
Snow at Malam Jabba from December, for the north’s easiest skiing. Kalam is very cold, and the road above it closes.
Short drives and good roads up to Kalam. The jeep track to Mahodand is bumpy but short.
Mingora is warm in summer; Kalam is cool, with nights around 10°C. Bring a warm layer.
Swat is conservative. Modest dress is appreciated, and ask before photographing people.

“The tour host messaged us before sunrise on the day we left, and kept checking in the whole way. My parents felt looked after.”
